Our Immediate Needs

The Children

We provide for the physical, educational, and spiritual needs of 45 children, ranging in age from one week to 21 years. Many of these beautiful children have been rescued from the streets, having been victims of trafficking, abuse, or have been found abandoned in dumps or pits.

We believe these children should have a home. These children should have an education.

General Funding

Growing numbers of children at the Zambian orphanage require more funding to survive. The orphanage has a very limited budget and, due to the rising cost of groceries and energy, it is stuck choosing each month what to purchase.

School and Personal Items

In addition to housing and food, the children are in need of school uniforms, supplies, shoes, books, backpacks and clothing.

Staff Support + Operations

The home is in need of consistent monthly sponsorship to bridge a $2,300 deficit in its $6,000 monthly budget. Currently, the 13 staff members earn only about $25 per week—significantly below the Zambian average of $10 per day—and the director, Loveness, often voluntarily forfeits her salary to ensure the children’s needs are prioritized. Increasing this funding would allow for a fair wage of $200 per month per staff member, providing the financial stability necessary to retain the dedicated team caring for the 45 children.

The Home

The One Way Mission Children’s Home began in 2002, when an old bottling and grocery store was renovated to provide a safe place for children who had no home. From the very start, the conditions there were rather primitive.

As the number of children has nearly doubled, the needs have grown substantially. The orphanage building is in disrepair, and the original structure is under immense strain. We face critical daily challenges.

Building-Wide Repairs

Our current home is in disrepair and requires immediate repairs, including fixing leaking roofs, and repairing/ replacing broken plumbing in both bathrooms

Bathroom & Plumbing Renovation

There is only one girls’ and one boys’ toilet for 45 children of all ages. The plumbing needs repair and updates in the both bathrooms.

Boys' Bathroom Sink

The sink is not even hooked up in the boys’ bathroom.

Upgraded Shower Facilities

The shower facilities are dingy and stained, despite rigorous cleaning efforts. The material, which looks like sheetrock, was not made to withstand water.

A Propane Stove

This is an immediate need because electricity in Zambia is cut off during the day at residences to allow the businesses to operate. This is also a cost-saving need, as charcoal is much more expensive than propane in Zambia.

A New Refrigerator

Dining Room Furniture

The home is in need of sturdy dining tables and seating to accommodate the growing number of residents. Currently, the orphanage lacks adequate furniture to seat 45 children, and guests. This request aims to provide a dedicated dining space with tables and seating for 50+ individuals.

Washing Machine Shelter

The home needs an outside shelter for a washing machine with a drain and electric outlet.

Transportation

One of our most pressing needs is a reliable passenger van. Currently, our home lacks a dedicated vehicle, making it difficult to get the children to school and church services safely. A mission van will not only ensure our children arrive at their appointments and classes on time but will also serve the local community, providing a dependable way for neighbors to reach church services together.

The Farm

The ultimate vision is to eventually move the orphanage to The Farm. This move would allow the orphanage to become more self-sufficient.

Our current plan is to collect enough donations to supplement the orphanage’s budget while renovating the original building to livable standards. Once we achieve these goals, we will start the process of planning and building on The Farm.

Main Living & Service Building

The vision includes a large home with a kitchen and rooms for the caregivers and babies. This large living space could also serve as a school, church and a clinic area.

Farm Truck

The orphanage is in need of a truck to haul the maize from the farm to town, where it can be processed. This truck would help the farm supplement the orphanage’s budget by selling maize to local churches.

Funding for Farm Construction

The plan is to collect enough donations to start the process of planning and building this new, more self-sufficient home.

Dormitories and Bathrooms

The dream for the land includes separate male and female dorms with bathroom facilities.

Fish Pond

The vision includes creating a pond on the property to harvest fish for food.

Water Well (A "Borehole")

The farm property is in dire need of a well (called a borehole in Zambia). They currently use a hand-dug well that is insufficient for watering the livestock and the gardens on the property, especially when we start constructing the orphanage buildings on the farm site.
